Spanish artist, Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) spent his adolescence in Barcelona. He keeps his initial training between the fine arts (in Llotja), academicism and modernism. It was following a trip and a solo exhibition in Paris where Pablo Picasso developed his own style: a sensitive, melancholy and even miserable painting. Recognized, Picasso testifies to his attachment to Barcelona, by signing in 1917, “The promenade of Columbus”, between figuration, cubism and anecdote.

Today, we find these canvases in the form of tapestries. The latter are produced as closely as possible to reality thanks to the Jules Pansu manufacture and in collaboration with the Picasso estate.

Pablo Picasso and the Cubist revolution

In the 1910s, an avant-garde movement changed arts forever. Cubism freed itself from the classic norms of painting, finally treating abstraction as a subject. This evolution towards more conceptual works carried a certain rejection of figuration that would eventually give birth to contemporary art. Behind this upheaval: Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso. The latter, whose career spanned over 7 decades, established himself as one of the most important artists of the 20th century. His paintings are often melancholic, delivering a distorted, emotional perspective on familiar scenes. Among his most celebrated works, Guernica (1937) is a dark chronicle of the Spanish Civil War. Another, The Promenade of Colombus (1917), testifies of the painter’s attachment to Barcelona. When Pablo Picasso died in France, in 1973, he left behind a colossal body of work, including over 1,800 paintings, 12,000 sketches and drawings, as well as thousands of sculptures and ceramics.
