From the famous tapestry of Queen Matilda, wife of William the Conqueror.
From the famous tapestry of Queen Matilda, wife of William the Conqueror. Year 1066: King Edward the Confessor of England dies. For several days, William prepares his fleet to leave Normandy to conquer England and dethrone his successor Harold. On the night of September 26-27, the 750 ships set sail from the Normandy coast…
The Bayeux Tapestry, also known as the Tapisserie de la Reine Mathilde, was originally an 11th-century embroidery (formerly known as “needlepoint tapestry”), and was added to UNESCO’s Memory of the World register in 2007.
This medieval hanging depicts events from the end of the reign of the King of England in 1064, when the throne of England was at stake. The key events of the battle are detailed, although some of the scenes relate events prior to the invasion itself. It seems to have been commissioned by Odon de Bayeux. It was eventually produced in the years following the conquest.
The Bayeux tapestry, sometimes considered a propaganda piece since it was very favorable to William the Conqueror, is of great documentary value for our knowledge of the XIe century in Normandy and England. It provides information on clothing, castles, ships and living conditions at the time. It is one of the rare examples of secular Romanesque art.
Preserved until the end of the 18the century in the Treasury of Bayeux Cathedral, it narrowly escaped destruction during the French Revolution. Today, it can be found in the Centre Guillaume le Conquérant, where a space is entirely dedicated to it.
The“Le départ de la flotte” tapestry represents only part of the Bayeux tapestry, which depicts several scenes, including the embarkation.
