Tapestry by William Morris
This tapestry was woven from designs by Edward Burne-Jones and William Morris in the late 19th century.
The figure represented is the goddess Flora. She is one of the most ancient and powerful of Italy’s agrarian goddesses. Every year in spring, she was celebrated in agrarian festivals designed to encourage the growth of cereals and fruit trees. Later, she was dedicated to flowers, to which she gave her old Sabine name. The goddess Flora plays the same essential role in the plant world as Venus does in the world of animate beings, both human and animal.
The inscription at the top and bottom of the hanging is a hymn to the goodness of the goddess:
“I am Earth’s handmaiden, I embroider her glorious gown and dress her in her days of mirth with for many a crown of renown. And while the little ones of the earth are weak and amuse themselves with the mother’s hem, I scatter every gift I earn from the sun and wind to gladden them.”
