Around the year 1000, Geoffroy de Preuilly is said to have initiated the first tournaments, which over the years became very popular, reaching their peak in the 12th century. These c ombats on horseback and with spears, man to man, pitted the families of the warrior nobility of the Middle Ages against each other. Around the royal family, the court attended these jousts in which the great nobility defended their banners and proved their family’s bravery. Through banquets and dances, these tournaments showcased all the characters of medieval times.
