William Morris made the original drawing of the Woodpecker, woven in 1885. This motif, with a very dense background, evoking the verdure with broad leaves of the Renaissance, has practically no perspective effects. The importance of this back-ground also reminds us of the large plants and foliages of Brussels’ verdure at the beginning of the 16th century. W.Morris used a limited range of colours, mostly reds, blues and bright greens.
